Regents Advisory Council

All of ACHE's Regents Advisory Councils are in the process of being appointed for the 2008-2009 Convocation Year. The appointment process will be completed and posted here on June 1.

Message from the Regent
Spring 2008

I want to thank all of you for your support and involvement during our recent Regent election. I am pleased to have the opportunity to work with Mary T. Parra, FACHE, from UCSD, our Chair of SOHL (San Diego Organization of Healthcare Leaders), and Gary G. Fybel, FACHE, CEO of Scripps Memorial. Both are strong candidates for the position and excellent leaders in their own right.

I look forward to the coming three years and serving you as the liaison to the ACHE's governance structure. I have been involved with ACHE over 35 years in various capacities and believe it to be one of the most well run, influential and professional societies of its kind in the country. Our involvement as individuals and as a group can only help to make the organization better and pave the way for future leaders in what has become the most complex and challenging industry in America.

My father taught me a long time ago that to be a true "professional" one needs to learn to give back if one takes from a field; to help others along the way and to believe in the values and ethics of what good leadership is all about. He was absolutely right!

I have had the good fortune of learning and interacting with others in our profession; having the support of a good mentor to challenge me and be there for me during difficult times; and obtaining opportunities to work in various health care settings and positions . all of which occurred as a result of my participation in ACHE.

As your Regent, I want to work to create an environment that continues to allow our younger members to interact and learn from senior members; to engage as many of you as I can in ACHE activities; and to help you truly grow in our field.

If I can be of help to you in attending ACHE educational endeavors (whether connecting you with the right people or obtaining a tuition waiver should you not be able to afford to attend any other way) . let me know.

Should you have an interest in serving on an ACHE committee or task force, please let me know. I am always on the "look out" for folks who are desirous of participating in this way. There are many opportunities.

On a personal note, I encourage your participation at the local level. Our chapter has come a long way over the last several years. Their programs and "CEO" Rounds are excellent and the networking opportunities are growing. If you have attended, please consider inviting someone who may not be a member of ACHE to join you at one of these sessions. They will quickly find that the time will be well spent.

Would it not be great if we could double our size of membership and participation at the local level? We have a large healthcare community. I have learned over the years that such growth actually pays off in "real" networking and exchange of thought; new job opportunities and tremendous satisfaction in being part of a meaningful group . no different than involvement in community or religious activities.

Later this month, we will have the chance to finalize our Regents Advisory Council in support of our members' efforts. We will have a strong diverse team of individuals who will be able to serve your interests and needs and support our local chapter in a meaningful way. More to follow in the next newsletter.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge the hard work, effort and commitment of Nick Macchione, FACHE, our recent past Regent. He did a masterful job of representing us and has been truly committed to all of you. His shoes will be difficult to fill. Nick is a "genuine" leader and a role model for others to follow. I am appreciative of his willingness to remain active at a local, regional and national level.

I look forward to working closely with Christopher D. Van Gorder, FACHE, CEO of Scripps Health, our Governor for District 5. He is committed to promoting ACHE at all levels and we are fortunate to have him in our midst as our regional leader.

Please don't hesitate to call, write or e-mail me at any time with your suggestions and ideas. My direct line is (858) 675-5107 and my e-mail is MHC1@pph.org.

Thanks for listening and the opportunity to share these thoughts with you.

Congratulations!

Survey Compares the Career Attainments of Healthcare Executives by Race/Ethnicity

This spring, five professional societies of healthcare executives are collaborating to study the career attainments of healthcare executives. Under the leadership of the American College of Healthcare Executives, members of ACHE, the Asian Healthcare Leaders Association (AHLA), the Institute for Diversity in Health Management (IFD), National Association of Health Services Executives (NAHSE) and the National Forum for Latino Healthcare Executives (NFLHE), will be sent a questionnaire that asks them about their preparations, achievements and attitudes relative to their careers in healthcare management. Results will be compared and presented in a report scheduled to be released in late 2008 or early 2009.

If you are among those sampled for the study, we request that you set aside the estimated 20 minutes to complete the survey. By filling out the survey, you will provide important information on diversity in the profession.

If you have questions about this research, please contact Peter Weil, PhD, FACHE, Vice President, Division of Research, ACHE at (312) 424-9440.
